Grading in an Acting Class
This is a performance class. The primary emphasis
is on what you do in class and your preparation for the work you do in
class. Since I cannot grade on talent, within the work that you do I
will be evaluating you in the following areas:
ATTENDANCE:
this is a performance class, if you are not here you cannot
perform. This is a skills class, if you are not here you cannot learn
or practice the skills necessary to becoming a good actor. Although
there are legitimate reasons for being absent and I will certainly
provide make-up work for authorized absences, it is not the same as
being here and participating with the group.
PARTICIPATION:
In order to become well trained at the skills necessary to being a good
actor you must practice them. There is not other way to become skilled
at what you are doing. Certainly every student will be required to
participate at some level so that I can evaluate and grade them, but the
more you participate the better you become.
PREPARATION:
It is absolutely necessary for you to practice the skills at home and
use the time at home to prepare for your in-class work. The skills
should be practiced on a regular basis, so there is no time when you do
not have some skill you should be practicing on at home. You in-class
work will reflect the amount of time and effort you have spent in
preparation.
PROGRESS:
If you attend class, participate in the classroom work, and prepare you
materials, you should make progress in developing the skills we are
working on.
GRADES:
Since this is a performance class the
emphasis is on what you do in class. Your in-class work (prepared and
improvisational) will be 50% of your grade. You will receive grades on
the results of specific projects and a weekly performance grade. Tests
and examinations (oral and written) will be 30% of your grade. Written
assignments will be 20% of your grade. Extra credit projects will be
available but may not make up more than 20 % of your total grade for the
grading period.
SPECIFIC CLASS WORK:
Specific classroom work will be based on the level you are at. At all
levels the activities and assignments will be based on the use of your
body, voice, technique, imagination, experiences, personality, and mind
to create characters. You will move, read, react, imagine and create in
the process of finding and becoming a character. There will be written
work at all levels in detailing the results of finding out about
specific personalities in the entertainment business, and analysis of
scripts and characters.
