Technical Theatre Classes

The technical theatre department while under the drama department serves the whole LaVilla community by providing backstage production assistance for any event in one of the school’s performance spaces.  The students learn about designing and building sets, costumes and prop, and also sound, lights and projections techniques.  These classes need a further student commitment to after school and weekend work calls and rehearsals. Students will be required to work some evening performances.

Admittance is by audition only.   The auditions are held in the spring for the beginning crew the following year.  Announcements will be made for the specific dates.

 Beginning Stagecraft

This class provides a broad overview of all aspects of technical theatre. Students will learn basic construction techniques, how to work in the various shops, how to crew a show, intro to set design and light/sound board operations.  This class is by audition only for 7th and 8th grade students.

 Advanced Stagecraft

Students pursuing technical theatre can continue on their 8th grade year.  They will take on leadership roles by becoming stage managers for various performances. Class work will include more design opportunities for set, light and sound, including research procedures and presentation techniques.

 Costume Design and Construction

Students will learn the basic techniques for designing costumes for the stage.  Class work will include script reading, research, costume history, design problem solving, figure drawing and presentation techniques.  Students will also learn basic sewing skills. Those already with sewing knowledge will explore more in-depth skills. Students will be responsible for constructing costumes for the various performances within the department.
