Technical Theatre Classes
The technical theatre
department while under the drama department serves the whole LaVilla
community by providing backstage production assistance for any event in
one of the school’s performance spaces. The students learn about
designing and building sets, costumes and prop, and also sound, lights
and projections techniques. These classes need a further student
commitment to after school and weekend work calls and rehearsals.
Students will be required to work some evening performances.
Admittance is by
audition only. The auditions are held in the spring for the beginning
crew the following year. Announcements will be made for the specific
dates.
Beginning Stagecraft
This class provides a
broad overview of all aspects of technical theatre. Students will learn
basic construction techniques, how to work in the various shops, how to
crew a show, intro to set design and light/sound board operations. This
class is by audition only for 7th and 8th grade
students.
Advanced Stagecraft
Students pursuing
technical theatre can continue on their 8th grade year. They
will take on leadership roles by becoming stage managers for various
performances. Class work will include more design opportunities for set,
light and sound, including research procedures and presentation
techniques.
Costume Design and Construction
Students will learn the
basic techniques for designing costumes for the stage. Class work will
include script reading, research, costume history, design problem
solving, figure drawing and presentation techniques. Students will also
learn basic sewing skills. Those already with sewing knowledge will
explore more in-depth skills. Students will be responsible for
constructing costumes for the various performances within the
department.
